Pick your poison?

How is that even a question? I’m picking the hot one.

cadesama:

Super-weapons ahoy! In the green corner, fighting for the Equalists, for life, liberty, and the right to lobotomize, we have the unbendable plantinum mecha! In the blue corner, fighting for… himself, we have Tarrlok, super-bender and scummy politician!

Who will win? Well, let’s look at what we actually have going here.

  • Two types of wrong, both fighting the wrong kind of fight. The problems of Republic City and the United Republic itself require political and social reform. Giant robots and bloodbending are not the answer. Not even close.
  • Super powers that are hollowed of spiritual meaning in a universe where the main character is supposed to be the spiritual leader. Emptying bending of its spirituality (ie, bloodbending, already an evil power, does not need the power of the Moon Spirit) is just as toxic to their world as pure industrialization that leaves bending/spirituality behind.
  • And let’s talk about that ideology for a moment. The Equalists have a utopian philosophy — once everyone is “equal”, we will see a utopian wonderland. Therefore, any sacrifice that occurs in the process of making things equal is justified. Anyone who stands in the way of their plans stands in the way of utopia and is not worth saving to begin with. So, yeah, clearly, not the good guys. But on the other hand, does Tarrlok stand for bender supremacy? It’s not clear yet, but even upholding the status quo is unacceptable. He’s clearly the bad guy also.
  • The real question is if Korra has to compromise and ally with one over the other, even temporarily. I think it’s entirely possible she will work WITH the Equalists to depose Tarrlok… and then Amon will stroll right in, set up shop, and screw her over.
  • Color. Despite Sato being from one of the original FN families of Yu Dao, the mechas are decked out in green. Tarrlok is obviously decked out in blue. That suggests that enclaves of support they will find beyond the city will be EK and WT respectively. Which still leaves the lingering question of the firebenders — pushed aside and stereotyped in the city, will they be a key swing faction? Will they choose instead to fully support the Avatar, helping to reform the city and finally fully regaining the honor of their nation?
