I wrote Mattel wondering whether we’d ever see any of the main female characters (I specifically asked about Katara, Toph, and Azula because even though there were two separate Zukos (technically three because of the Blue Spirit) and two or three Aangs, a Jet, a Sokka, and a Zhao (and possibly a random fire nation soldier but I didn’t ever OWN that one) there was no sign of any of the girls (and for the record there was literally only ONE episode in the series Katara was not in at all) even though the third series of action figures was allegedly in the works. And while I would have adored Mai Ty Lee and Suki I could understand (from a purely business standpoint) why they might not make those three characters (at the point I wrote them Mai and Zuko were not yet one of the official couples and God only knew where Suki and her warriors were…it was the maddening hiatus between two and three). But I thought surely we’d see Katara (she was the one who found the Avatar and appeared in every episode except the one Aang didn’t even show up or get mentioned in) or Toph (she was an instant fan favorite and Aang’s teacher) or at the absolute very worst Azula (she’s the main season 2 villain bar none. She successfully captured Ba Sing Se—a feat none of her people managed in 100 years and she did it in an unbelievably quick time!)

I wish I’d kept the response. It made me so mad I shredded it. But the person who responded told me that the series (and thus the toys) was explicitly marketed for 6-11 year old boys and those boys wanted the male characters with cool outfits and weapons so that’s what Mattel would continue to make. The person claimed there was no interest in having any girl action figures from that series (or starting a line for girls at all) and completely ignored my discussion of the fact that a large chunk of the fans were girls and women (many of whom were college aged and older or had an income to buy things) with a keen interest in seeing the toys and other merchandise for more of the characters.

The long and short is I have yet to spend a single cent on anything with Mattel’s name on it since that e-mail. Not that there’s been anything I’ve been willing to surrender my money for, but if we had Korra toys I’d buy them all.

This is a really interesting interview with Yoo Jae-myung, who’s an animation director for both A:tLA and LoK. There’s quite a bit of new behind-the-scenes information from both series, and he gets to tell his personal story about getting involved in animation, too.

The most relevant thing for Korra fans now, I think, is that he pretty much confirmed that the Studio Pierrot rumors were true at one point (because Studio Mir wanted to take a breather by working on The Boondocks instead), but Book 2 ended up being animated by Studio Mir anyway because that particular partnership didn’t work out.

Also interesting (if terribly depressing) is that Nickelodeon actually suspended production of Korra when Book 1 was being planned because they didn’t like Korra being a female protagonist… but after seeing the first episode completed, they went all in for four books. They apparently see LoK as their premiere show, which is really awesome. =D (Now just make us some proper merchandise, Nick!)

There’s certainly a lot more in the video, though, so I’d definitely suggest watching it. (Though I will warn that they use finale clips in the background that… really shouldn’t be used as background for an interview? I mean, I don’t want to see the boat scene when I’m watching an interview =( )
